📊 Angeeras Market Wrap | 1 September 2026
Indian benchmarks ended a listless session marginally in the red on Tuesday, as a spike in crude oil prices and rising bond yields on the back of fresh Middle East tensions overshadowed a blockbuster GDP print. A late-session sell-off dragged the Nifty off its highs, though the index managed to hold the psychologically important 24,000 mark.
Market Performance The Nifty 50 opened firm and climbed to an intraday high of 24,143.15, but couldn’t sustain above 24,100. Selling intensified in the second half — the index slipped below 24,050 around 1:30 PM and sank to a low of 23,952.55 before a modest recovery into the close. It settled at 24,055.80, down 24.60 points (-0.10%). The Sensex ended at 76,944.28, down 12.99 points. Bank Nifty was the notable laggard, closing 1.06% lower. India VIX was unchanged, signalling no real spike in fear despite the choppiness.
Key Factors Driving the Market
- Crude spike: Brent jumped 1.7% to $92.18/bbl and WTI 1.8% to $87.10/bbl as renewed U.S.–Iran fighting stoked fears of supply disruption through the Strait of Hormuz — a direct negative for an import-heavy economy, reviving inflation and borrowing-cost worries.
- Blockbuster GDP: Q1 FY27 real GDP grew 7.8% YoY, comfortably beating the RBI’s 7% forecast. Gross fixed capital formation surged 11.9%, with manufacturing up 9.2% and services 10%. Investment, exports and resilient consumption led the way, though weak agriculture/mining and higher energy prices remain risks to sustaining 7%+ growth.
- PMI softens: Manufacturing PMI slipped to a five-year low of 52.8 (from 53.5), the third straight monthly decline, with employment contracting for the first time in 2.5 years — though it stayed comfortably in expansion.
- Robust GST: Gross collections rose 14.8% YoY to ~Rs 2 lakh crore, a third consecutive double-digit month, aided by a 29% jump in import revenue.
Sectoral Performance Only 3 of 11 sectoral indices closed green. Nifty IT led (+0.98%), with 7 of 10 constituents advancing. Nifty Pharma was the biggest loser (-1.45%), snapping a five-day winning streak after testing its 50-DEMA. Banking weakness weighed broadly on sentiment.
Stocks in Focus
- Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri +20% — GRT Jewellers agreed to acquire a controlling stake.
- Happiest Minds -10.87% — ITC’s IT unit to buy a 22.1% stake; ITC gained 4.34%.
- Milky Mist Dairy +10% — newly listed, on higher quarterly profit.
Top Contributors to Nifty 50 Gainers: Reliance Industries (+46.58 pts), Bharti Airtel (+44.27 pts), ITC (+23.34 pts). Drags: Axis Bank (-26.26 pts), ICICI Bank (-24.97 pts), SBI (-22.95 pts).
Market Breadth Breadth was firmly negative. Of 3,649 stocks on the NSE, 1,345 advanced and 2,196 declined (108 unchanged). The broader market underperformed — Nifty Midcap 100 fell 1.39% to a monthly low, while Smallcap 100 slipped 0.23%. 119 stocks hit 52-week highs vs 111 lows; 107 locked in upper circuits vs 98 in lower.
Outlook The Nifty’s ability to defend 24,000 despite negative breadth is a mild positive, but the late sell-off and midcap weakness warrant caution. Immediate support is seen at 23,950, below which 23,850 comes into play; resistance sits at 24,100–24,145. With crude and geopolitics driving near-term direction, traders will watch the Strait of Hormuz situation, bond yields and global cues. Strong GDP and GST data lend medium-term support, but the Street will want to see crude cool off before committing to fresh highs.
