Market roundup – 21/08/2026
Opening Summary
Indian benchmark indices ended largely flat on Friday, August 21, extending Thursday’s recovery as elevated crude oil prices and pressure in global bond markets kept investors on the sidelines. The session was defined by consolidation, with the Nifty 50 oscillating in a narrow band around 24,225 as buyers and sellers stayed evenly matched. Buying at lower levels lent support, but the absence of a decisive trigger kept the market rangebound into the close.
Market Performance
The Nifty 50 opened at 24,284.05, marked its intraday high at the same level, and slipped to a low of 24,206.80 before recovering to settle at 24,252 — up 20.15 points, or 0.08 per cent. The Sensex closed marginally higher at 77,540.83, adding 3.11 points. Bank Nifty outperformed the frontline indices, ending 0.46 per cent higher. India VIX, however, jumped nearly 4 per cent to move above the 11 mark, signalling a modest rise in market uncertainty.
Key Factors Driving the Market
- Crude oil in focus: Brent traded near USD 93.46 per barrel and WTI around USD 87.40, though oil futures eased on the day despite U.S. threats of the “toughest sanctions in history” on Iran. The potential fallout for global oil supplies remained a key overhang.
- Global bond market pressure: Firmness in global yields kept risk appetite in check.
- Geopolitics: Escalating rhetoric around Iran sanctions continued to weigh on sentiment.
Sectoral Performance
Sectoral action was mixed, with six of the 11 sectoral indices closing in the green. Nifty Metal was the standout gainer, rising 0.86 per cent on the back of a sharp rally in Welspun Corp. On the flip side, Nifty FMCG was the weakest sector, down 0.74 per cent, with 11 of its 15 constituents finishing lower.
Stocks in Focus
- Welspun Corp surged 15.30 per cent after bagging a record ₹17,200 crore pipe supply order.
- Niva Bupa opened more than 3 per cent lower after the insurance regulator barred the health insurer from opening new branches for six months over a breach of business expense limits; the stock later pared losses to close down just 0.31 per cent.
Top Contributors to Nifty 50
Supports: ICICI Bank (+12.65 points), Kotak Mahindra Bank (+8.76 points) and Power Grid Corporation (+7.51 points) led the gains, with banking names doing the heavy lifting. Drags: Infosys (−6.92 points) was the biggest laggard, followed by Maruti Suzuki (−6.89 points) and ITC (−4.72 points).
Market Breadth
Breadth stayed positive. Of the 3,644 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,885 advanced, 1,634 declined and 125 were unchanged. A total of 139 stocks hit 52-week highs against 80 at 52-week lows, while 130 stocks were locked in upper circuits versus 87 in lower circuits. The broader market outperformed — the Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.10 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.69 per cent.
Outlook
The market remains in a consolidation phase following Thursday’s recovery, with banking stocks and the broader market providing a cushion. However, elevated crude prices, pressure in global bond markets and unfolding geopolitical developments continue to keep sentiment cautious. Traders would do well to watch crude and global yields for the next directional cue, with 24,200 acting as immediate support and the 24,300–24,350 zone as near-term resistance to clear.
