Bulls Bounce Back: Nifty Snaps Seven-Session Losing Streak

2–4 minutes

August 20 , 2026 – Thursday Market roundup

Opening Summary

Indian equity benchmarks staged a strong rebound on Thursday, August 20, snapping the Nifty 50’s longest losing streak in 11 months. Buying emerged across IT, financials and other key sectors as improving global sentiment and easing bond-yield concerns helped revive risk appetite.

Market Performance

The Nifty 50 opened at 24,225.45, slipped to an intraday low of 24,184.55, and subsequently recovered to a high of 24,265.15. The index settled at 24,231.85, gaining 153.55 points, or 0.64%, snapping its seven-session losing streak.

The Sensex advanced 628.04 points, or 0.82%, to close at 77,537.72, while the Bank Nifty gained 0.45%.

The India VIX declined 4.48% to below 11, indicating a moderation in near-term market volatility.

Broader markets also ended higher, with the Nifty Midcap 100 gaining 0.41% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 rising 0.68%.

Key Factors Driving the Market

  • Global bond yields ease: A stabilisation in global bond markets improved risk appetite after rising yields had weighed heavily on emerging-market equities. The U.S. Treasury’s move to increase longer-duration debt buybacks helped ease concerns around bond-market liquidity.
  • IT and financial stocks lead: Buying returned to two key sectors that had faced pressure during the recent sell-off.
  • Positive global cues: Firmer Asian markets and improved global sentiment provided support to domestic equities.
  • Short covering: After seven consecutive sessions of declines, the rebound was also aided by short covering as investors took advantage of lower levels.
  • Crude remains a risk: Brent crude rose 1.59% to $93.08 per barrel, while WTI gained 1.63% to $87.23, as renewed tensions involving Iran raised concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies.

Sectoral Performance

The recovery was broad-based, with 10 of the 11 Nifty sectoral indices ending higher.

Nifty Media emerged as the top gainer, advancing 2.13%, led by a nearly 9% jump in Network18.

IT and financial stocks also remained firm, supporting the benchmark’s recovery. Nifty PSU Bank was the only sectoral loser, edging down 0.01% and extending its losing streak to six consecutive sessions.

Stocks in Focus

Balrampur Chini Mills surged 17.87% after the government imposed stockholding limits amid rising sugar prices.

Gold-loan financiers also gained as gold prices climbed to their highest level in more than two months. Muthoot Finance advanced 3.8%, while Manappuram Finance gained 2.7%. Lower U.S. Treasury yields and a weaker dollar supported gold prices, improving the outlook for gold-backed lending companies.

Top Contributors to Nifty 50

HDFC Bank was the biggest contributor to the Nifty’s gains, adding 16.86 points, followed by ICICI Bank, which contributed 15.46 points. Bharti Airtel added another 13.37 points.

On the downside, Hindalco Industries was the biggest drag, subtracting 2.87 points from the index. Tata Consumer Products and HCL Technologies also weighed on the benchmark, reducing it by 1.66 points and 1.47 points, respectively.

Market Breadth

Market breadth remained positive on the NSE. Of the 3,632 stocks traded, 2,108 advanced, 1,405 declined and 119 remained unchanged.

A total of 157 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 89 stocks hit their 52-week lows. Meanwhile, 123 stocks were locked in the upper circuit and 80 stocks in the lower circuit.

Outlook

Thursday’s rebound offers some much-needed relief after seven consecutive sessions of declines, but it is still too early to view the move as a confirmed trend reversal. The Nifty’s ability to sustain levels above 24,200 will remain crucial in the near term.

With global bond yields stabilising and domestic financials and IT showing renewed buying interest, the market could attempt to build on the recovery. However, elevated crude prices, geopolitical tensions and persistent foreign-investor selling remain key headwinds.

For now, the rebound signals that buyers are willing to defend lower levels—but the market needs follow-through in the coming sessions to establish a durable recovery.
