The ITR Deadline Is Days Away. Here’s the Tax-Smart Investing Checklist Most People Only Think About in March.

July 31 is the ITR filing deadline for FY 2025-26. While you’re pulling together documents, it’s the perfect moment to check whether your investments are actually working for you tax-wise — not just growth-wise.

If you haven’t filed your ITR for FY 2025-26 yet, the deadline is July 31, 2026 for ITR-1 and ITR-2 filers. Miss it, and you’re looking at a late fee of up to ₹5,000 under Section 234F — plus the headache of a rushed, error-prone filing.

But here’s the bigger opportunity most people miss: tax time is when you actually look closely at your investment statements. Use that moment well, and you can turn a compliance chore into a portfolio review that saves you real money — not just this year, but structurally, going forward.

Equity & Mutual Fund Taxation — The Part Everyone Gets Wrong

Most retail investors know equity is “tax-efficient” but few know the actual rules:

  • Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) on equity/equity mutual funds held over 1 year: taxed at 12.5% beyond ₹1.25 lakh of gains in a financial year
  • Short-Term Capital Gains (STCG) on equity held under 1 year: taxed at 20% — a meaningful gap versus LTCG
  • Debt mutual funds (bought after April 2023) are taxed at your slab rate regardless of holding period — no indexation benefit anymore
  • Dividends are added to your income and taxed at your slab rate

The mistake we see most often: Investors sell a winning stock or fund at the 11-month mark out of impatience, paying 20% STCG instead of waiting one more month for the 12.5% LTCG rate. On a ₹5 lakh gain, that’s a difference of roughly ₹37,500 — for waiting 30 days.

The ₹1.25 Lakh LTCG Exemption — Use It or Lose It

Every financial year, the first ₹1.25 lakh of long-term capital gains from equity is tax-free. This doesn’t carry forward — if you don’t use it, it’s gone. A simple, legal strategy many investors overlook: if you have long-held equity positions sitting on gains, consider harvesting gains up to this threshold each year (sell and, if you still like the stock, buy back) to reset your cost basis higher, tax-free.

ELSS: Still One of the Few “Growth + Tax Saving” Tools

Under the old tax regime, ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) mutual funds remain one of the only instruments that combine equity market growth with a Section 80C deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh. The lock-in is just 3 years — the shortest among all 80C options. If you’re still on the old regime, this is worth a serious look before the financial year gets ahead of you.

“In this world nothing is certain except death and taxes.” — Benjamin Franklin. Franklin didn’t know about ELSS, but the principle holds: plan for the certain, don’t scramble for it.

Your July Checklist

  • Download your Capital Gains Statement (CAS) from CDSL/NSDL or your broker before you file
  • Check if you’re near the 1-year holding mark on any large position — a few weeks’ wait can change your tax rate
  • Review whether you’ve used your ₹1.25 lakh LTCG exemption for the year
  • If on the old regime, confirm your 80C limit isn’t already exhausted before assuming ELSS helps you
  • File before July 31 — even if taxes are simple, the portal gets overloaded in the final days
