The Indian investment landscape is witnessing a gradual shift towards purpose-driven investing, with investors increasingly looking beyond just financial returns and seeking portfolios that align with their personal values.
In a significant development, NSE Indices, a subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), has launched the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index — a new thematic benchmark designed for investors who wish to follow ethical and non-violence-based investment principles.
The index aims to create a framework for values-based investing in India while opening opportunities for the launch of passive investment products such as Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), Index Funds and structured investment solutions.
What is the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index?
Unlike conventional market indices that primarily focus on market capitalisation, sector representation or financial performance, the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index introduces an additional layer of ethical screening.
The index has been developed in partnership with the Ahimsagain Foundation and follows the foundation’s Ahimsa Investment Movement (AIM) methodology.
The key objective is to identify companies within the broader Nifty 500 universe that meet specific ethical criteria related to non-violence and responsible business practices.
How Does the Ethical Screening Work?
Companies are evaluated and classified into three categories:
🟢 Green Category
Companies that meet the prescribed ethical standards and are eligible for inclusion in the index.
🟠 Orange Category
Companies with certain levels of involvement in activities that do not meet the inclusion criteria.
🔴 Red Category
Companies involved in activities considered inconsistent with the Ahimsa principles and therefore excluded.
Only companies classified under the Green category are selected for inclusion in the index.
Investment Approach and Index Methodology
The Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index derives its constituents from the established Nifty 500 universe, providing investors with diversified exposure across Indian equities.
The stocks in the index are weighted based on free-float market capitalisation, ensuring that larger companies have a proportionately higher representation while maintaining the benefits of a broad-based portfolio.
The index has:
📌 Base Date: 1 April 2016
📌 Base Value: 1,000
📌 Rebalancing Frequency: Semi-annual review
The periodic reconstitution will ensure that companies continue to satisfy the ethical eligibility criteria over time.
Why Is This Development Important?
The launch highlights an important trend in global markets — the rise of thematic and responsible investing.
Today’s investors are increasingly interested in strategies that combine:
✅ Wealth creation
✅ Long-term sustainability
✅ Personal values and beliefs
✅ Social impact considerations
Globally, concepts such as ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) investing have gained popularity. However, the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index follows a more specific approach by focusing on companies’ involvement in activities related to harm to animals.
Growing Interest in Value-Based Investing
The launch comes shortly after BSE Index Services introduced the BSE Saatvik 100 Index, another value-driven benchmark based on ethical investment principles and derived from the BSE 500 universe.
These developments indicate that Indian investors are gradually getting access to a wider range of specialised investment choices beyond traditional market-cap-based indices.
Market Perspective
While thematic indices often appeal to a specific investor segment, they represent an important evolution in the investment ecosystem.
For investors, the key remains balancing investment philosophy with financial fundamentals. Ethical preferences can guide stock selection, but factors such as:
- Business quality
- Earnings growth
- Valuation
- Management credibility
- Long-term competitive advantage
continue to remain critical for sustainable wealth creation.
The introduction of the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index marks another step in India’s journey towards a more diverse and customised investment landscape, where investors can increasingly choose strategies that reflect both their financial goals and personal principles.
