๐ Market Update | July 8, 2026
Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on Wednesday, July 8, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex recording their biggest single-day decline in months. Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, a sharp spike in crude oil prices, weak global cues, and rising bond yields triggered broad-based selling across sectors, while investors shifted towards safer assets.
The Nifty 50 opened 139 points lower and remained under pressure throughout the session. After hovering near the 24,250 mark in early trade, selling intensified during the second half, dragging the index to an intraday low of 23,805.20. The benchmark eventually settled at 23,882.05, down 516.65 points (2.12%). The Sensex declined 1,677.12 points (2.15%) to close at 76,503.60, while the Bank Nifty fell 2.51% to 56,750. Reflecting heightened uncertainty, India VIX surged 26%, climbing above the 14 mark.
๐ Key Factors That Drove the Market
๐ Geopolitical Tensions Escalate
Market sentiment deteriorated after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the interim agreement with Iran had ended following fresh military strikes, reviving fears of a prolonged conflict in the Middle East. The renewed uncertainty prompted investors to reduce exposure to risk assets globally.
๐ข๏ธ Crude Oil Prices Surge
Concerns over possible supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil prices sharply higher. Brent crude climbed nearly 5% to around USD 78.09 per barrel, while WTI crude approached USD 74 per barrel. Higher crude prices raised concerns about inflation, Indiaโs import bill, and profitability for oil-dependent industries.
๐ Weak Global Cues
Global markets remained under pressure, with European indices falling up to 2%, Japanโs Nikkei declining 1.5%, South Koreaโs Kospi plunging 6%, and Dow Jones futures trading nearly 1% lower. Rising U.S. Treasury yields also weighed on investor sentiment.
๐ต Rupee Weakens
The Indian Rupee weakened beyond โน95.50 per U.S. dollar, pressured by higher crude prices and a stronger dollar, increasing concerns over inflation and potential foreign fund outflows.
๐ Sectoral Performance
Selling was broad-based, with all major sectoral indices ending in the red.
- Nifty PSU Bank was the worst-performing sector, falling 2.72%.
- Nifty Oil & Gas, Auto and FMCG indices declined more than 2% each.
- Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 1.55%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 2.24%, indicating weakness across the broader market.
๐ Stocks in Focus
Despite the broad sell-off, a few stocks managed to outperform.
- Nykaa gained 0.87% after reporting a strong Q1 FY27 business update, with revenue expected to grow close to 30% year-on-year.
- Orchid Pharma surged 8.39% after signing a licensing and supply agreement with Russiaโs Pharmasyntez JSC for Exblifep, representing a potential opportunity worth USD 178 million.
Meanwhile, oil marketing companies, paint manufacturers, airline operators and tyre companies witnessed sharp selling pressure as investors priced in the impact of higher crude oil prices.

๐ Outlook
The sharp correction highlights the sensitivity of global markets to geopolitical developments. Going ahead, investors will closely track developments in the Middle East, crude oil prices, global bond yields, currency movements, and FII activity for further market direction. While near-term volatility may remain elevated, long-term investors should stay focused on fundamentals and avoid making investment decisions based solely on short-term market swings.
