Market update – Tuesday, 7th July 2026
The Indian equity markets took a breather on Tuesday, 7th July 2026, as the Nifty 50 and Sensex snapped their four-session winning streak amid weekly NSE expiry-related volatility. While the headline indices closed marginally lower, the session was far from bearish. Strength in Information Technology stocks, continued Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) buying, easing crude oil prices, and favourable monsoon progress prevented a deeper correction, suggesting that the broader market structure remains constructive.
The Nifty 50 opened 34 points higher and climbed to an intraday high of 24,530.90 before witnessing profit booking that pushed it to an intraday low of 24,418.45. Selling intensified during the final hour, dragging the index below its 200-day Exponential Moving Average. The index eventually settled at 24,398.70, down 31.65 points (-0.13%).
The Sensex declined 104.35 points (-0.13%) to close at 78,180.72, while the Bank Nifty slipped 0.16%, ending near the 58,200 mark.
One encouraging sign for investors was the continued decline in volatility. India VIX fell 1.44% and remained below the 12 level, indicating that market participants are still relatively calm despite the day’s pullback.
Foreign Investors Continue Their Return
Foreign Institutional Investors remained supportive of Indian equities.
According to NSDL data, FPIs invested ₹14,634 crore into banking stocks during the second half of June—the strongest fortnightly inflow into the sector in the past 14 months. Overall, FPIs turned net buyers with equity inflows of approximately ₹14,109 crore, supported by the RBI’s accommodative policy stance and recent government tax reforms aimed at attracting foreign capital.
This sustained foreign participation continues to provide a strong underlying cushion to the Indian markets.
Sector Performance
The market displayed a mixed sectoral trend.
The Nifty IT Index emerged as the day’s biggest winner, rising 2.43%, with nine out of its ten constituents closing in positive territory. Optimism ahead of the upcoming earnings season kept investors interested in technology stocks.
On the other hand, the Nifty Realty Index declined 1.58%, becoming the worst-performing sector of the day. The correction was largely driven by weakness in Brigade Enterprises, and the index also ended its impressive five-session rally during which it had gained over 10%.
Broader Markets Witness Mild Profit Booking
After a strong recent rally, broader markets also experienced some healthy profit booking.
- Nifty Midcap 100: -0.30%
- Nifty Smallcap 100: -0.55%
Notably, the Smallcap index had touched an 18-month high during the session before retreating.

Today’s decline appears more like a pause after a strong rally than the beginning of a major correction.
- Strong FPI inflows continue to support the medium-term bullish outlook for Indian equities.
- IT stocks are showing renewed leadership ahead of the earnings season and deserve close attention.
- Realty and broader markets may witness intermittent profit booking after their recent sharp upmove.
- Investors should continue focusing on fundamentally strong businesses rather than reacting to day-to-day market fluctuations.
