🔴 Rally Pauses as IT Cracks, But Mid & Small Caps Keep the Momentum Alive

3–5 minutes

30/06/2026

Indian equities ended lower on Tuesday, June 30, as heavy selling in information technology and select banking stocks erased strong opening gains. While benchmark indices slipped for a second consecutive session, the broader market remained resilient, with mid-cap and small-cap stocks continuing to outperform. Expiry-related volatility added to the choppy trading environment, even as falling crude oil prices and improving domestic fundamentals continued to support the broader market outlook.

The Nifty 50 opened nearly 85 points higher but gradually lost momentum through the afternoon session before witnessing sharper selling in the final hours. It settled at 23,865.75, down 80.50 points (-0.34%). The Sensex also declined 249.70 points (-0.33%) to close at 76,478.67, while the Bank Nifty slipped 0.32%, extending its losing streak to two sessions.

Despite today’s weakness, June remained a positive month overall. The Nifty gained around 1.5% during the month, while the Sensex advanced approximately 2.5%, supported by softer crude oil prices, improving foreign flows, and policy measures aimed at supporting the rupee. However, concerns over sticky U.S. inflation and expectations of potential Federal Reserve rate hikes later this year weighed on export-oriented sectors like IT.

Market Breadth & Internals

Market participation remained fairly healthy despite the decline in headline indices.

  • Advancing Stocks: 1,919
  • Declining Stocks: 1,386

The market also witnessed strong stock-specific action:

  • 52-Week Highs: 127
  • 52-Week Lows: 60
  • Upper Circuits: 106

The strong number of advancing stocks despite benchmark weakness indicates that broader market participation remains constructive.

Sector Performance

Sectoral performance remained mixed, with only 4 of the 11 major sectoral indices ending in positive territory.

The biggest winner was Nifty Realty, which gained 1.31% after closing above its 200-day exponential moving average, with most constituent stocks ending higher.

Nifty Auto rose 0.23% after the Delhi Government unveiled its new EV Policy 2026, mandating electric three-wheelers from January 2027 and electric two-wheelers from April 2028, providing a long-term boost to India’s electric mobility ecosystem.

On the losing side, Nifty IT emerged as the worst-performing sector, falling 2.73% amid concerns that higher U.S. interest rates could reduce technology spending by global clients.

Meanwhile, broader markets continued their impressive run:

  • Nifty Midcap 100: +0.37%
  • Nifty Smallcap 100: +1.02%

What This Means for Investors

  • Today’s decline was driven largely by weakness in IT and select heavyweight stocks rather than broad-based selling, as market breadth remained positive.
  • Continued strength in mid-cap and small-cap indices suggests domestic risk appetite remains healthy despite benchmark consolidation.
  • The EV ecosystem continues to receive strong policy support, making auto and ancillary companies an important sector to watch over the medium term.
  • Investors should closely monitor upcoming U.S. economic data and global interest rate expectations, as these could influence foreign fund flows and sectoral leadership.
