Market Update – 12 June 2026
Indian equity benchmarks ended with their strongest single-day gains in nearly two months on Friday, June 12, as easing geopolitical tensions, declining crude oil prices, and aggressive buying in heavyweight stocks triggered a broad-based market rally.
The Nifty 50 opened with a gap-up of more than 250 points and briefly pared some gains to touch an intraday low of 23,313.90. However, buying momentum intensified during the afternoon session, pushing indices sharply higher. The Sensex surged over 1,700 points during the day, while the Nifty comfortably reclaimed the 23,600 mark, recording its best performance since April 8, 2026.
At the closing bell, the Nifty 50 settled at 23,622.90, up 461.30 points (1.99%), while the Sensex soared 1,695.96 points (2.30%) to close at 73,527.96. The Bank Nifty outperformed with a robust 2.97% gain, marking its strongest advance in two months. Meanwhile, India VIX, the market’s fear gauge, declined 5.73%, signalling improving investor confidence.
The Story Behind Today’s Rally
Markets found strong support after reports suggested progress toward a potential understanding between the United States and Iran. According to media reports, the proposed arrangement could pave the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and easing of sanctions on Iranian oil exports, helping stabilise global energy supplies.
Further optimism emerged after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that a breakthrough had been achieved with Iran and that the country had agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons.
The biggest trigger, however, was the decline in crude oil prices. Brent crude slipped to around USD 85 per barrel, easing concerns around imported inflation and strengthening India’s macroeconomic outlook. Lower crude prices are particularly beneficial for India, reducing pressure on the current account deficit and improving profitability for several sectors.
Sectoral Performance
The rally was broad-based, with 10 out of 11 sectoral indices ending in positive territory.
- The Nifty Realty Index emerged as the top-performing sector, gaining 1.78% and snapping its two-day losing streak.
- The Nifty Financial Services Index rallied nearly 3%, aided by strong gains in banking heavyweights and improved liquidity sentiment following the RBI’s concessional forex swap facility for banks’ overseas borrowings.
- Infrastructure, oil marketing, aviation, paints, tyres and cement stocks witnessed healthy buying interest as investors priced in the benefits of lower crude prices.
The only weak spot remained the Nifty IT Index, which slipped 0.09%, extending its losing streak to eight consecutive sessions. The index now trades nearly 24% below its February 2026 peak, reflecting concerns around AI-driven disruption, weakness in global technology stocks and lingering geopolitical uncertainties.
