Banks to the Rescue: RBI Liquidity Boost Sparks a Stunning Market Comeback

3–5 minutes

Market update for June 9 , 2026

Indian equity markets staged an impressive recovery on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, as investors cheered the Reserve Bank of India’s latest liquidity-enhancing measures and took comfort from easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Banking stocks led the charge, helping benchmark indices erase intraday losses and close firmly in positive territory.

The Nifty 50 opened with a strong gap-up of nearly 136 points, reflecting optimism at the start of the session. However, the enthusiasm faded quickly as profit booking dragged the index to an intraday low of 23,104.45. The second half witnessed a remarkable V-shaped rebound, with buyers returning aggressively to banking counters. The benchmark eventually settled at 23,242.10, gaining 119.10 points (0.52%).

The Sensex mirrored the recovery, climbing 394.50 points (0.54%) to close at 73,918.76.

The standout performer was the Bank Nifty, which surged more than 2%, significantly outperforming the broader market. Meanwhile, India VIX, the market’s fear gauge, declined sharply by 8.5%, indicating a meaningful improvement in investor confidence.

What Fuelled the Rally?

The primary trigger came from the RBI’s announcement of measures aimed at improving foreign currency liquidity and reducing funding costs for banks.

The central bank:

  • Expanded the External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) framework, allowing banks greater flexibility to raise foreign currency borrowings.
  • Introduced a strategic swap facility that could potentially reduce hedging costs by around 1.5%.
  • Clarified that banks can extend loans against FCNR(B) deposits, enhancing the attractiveness of these deposits for non-resident Indians.

Market participants estimate that these initiatives could attract between USD 50–70 billion through ECBs and FCNR(B) deposits over time.

Banks with elevated loan-to-deposit ratios emerged as key beneficiaries, as the measures provide an additional avenue to support future credit growth.

Geopolitical Clouds Begin to Clear

Investor sentiment also improved after reports suggested a halt in hostilities between Iran and Israel, following an appeal by U.S. President Donald Trump. Although Tehran warned that military action could resume if Israel continued operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, the immediate fears of a broader regional conflict eased.

As a result, Brent crude oil steadied near USD 91 per barrel, giving up most of its previous gains and reducing concerns over energy-driven inflationary pressures.

  • The sharp fall in India VIX indicates that near-term risk appetite has improved substantially.
  • Midcaps and smallcaps continue to demonstrate resilience, suggesting selective opportunities beyond frontline names.
  • While geopolitical tensions have eased for now, investors should continue monitoring crude oil prices and global developments closely.

Markets once again reminded investors that periods of uncertainty often create opportunities. Tuesday’s session transformed from early anxiety into renewed optimism, with banks taking centre stage and leading one of the strongest intraday recoveries seen in recent weeks.
