August 1st
Indian equity markets began August on a weak note as escalating trade tensions and selling in heavyweight stocks dragged the benchmarks lower. The Nifty 50 slipped by 109.55 points or 0.44 per cent to close at 24,658.80, while the BSE Sensex fell by 341.62 points or 0.42 per cent, ending at 80,844.69.
The decline came amid news that the United States formally implemented a 25% tariff on select Indian imports, adding to investor caution. Traders were also seen reducing risk exposure ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserveβs policy outcome and Indiaβs own monetary policy announcement later in the week.
Sectoral & Stock Highlights
Only three out of the eleven key sectoral indices ended the day in the green. The Nifty FMCG index rose by 0.64 per cent, supported by gains in ITC and Marico. The Nifty Realty index advanced modestly, while Nifty Metal saw mild buying after several sessions of selling.
On the downside, the Nifty Bank and Nifty IT indices led the losses, declining 0.88 per cent and 0.72 per cent, respectively. Weak earnings from select private banks and cautious commentary from IT firms weighed on investor sentiment.
In individual stock action:
ITC rose 1.83 per cent, contributing 14.78 points to the Nifty 50, after its hotel subsidiary reported robust quarterly earnings. Kotak Mahindra Bank bounced 1.28 per cent after a three-day losing streak. On the losing side, Reliance Industries, Infosys, and Tata Motors were major drags, shaving off a combined 39.82 points from the Nifty.
Broader Market Performance
The broader markets underperformed. The Nifty Midcap 100 lost 0.65 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 1.12 per cent. Small-cap stocks, which had shown strong momentum in recent months, continued to see profit booking.
